Tolerance
by Susan deCaussin

In life, we can experience the same lessons over and over again, but each time in a new light. With each experience, our perspective is altered in such a way that we never quite see things the same way again. For with each test comes greater clarity about the universal truths that guide us through our soul’s journey.

Things that we can’t relate to in our early years, can suddenly become clear, and make sense, after compiling life experiences that have made us aware of a much bigger picture. Like building blocks, our wisdom grows with each problem we navigate our way through.

Because of this process, it can be tempting to judge the decisions and choices of others. You may witness behavior that seems reckless, rude or compulsive and feel compelled to criticize or sit in judgment.  What we sometimes forget is that the struggles we’ve weathered have provided us valuable insight, and not everyone is at the same point in their journey as we are.

For example, if you took the time to think about who you were 10, 20 or 30 years ago, would you not, at this point in your life, be a bit critical of some of your past actions and decisions? Of course you would. Why? Because increased clarity has been the gift you’ve received with each storm you’ve survived.

On the other side of that coin, how many times have you met people that seem to understand things at a much deeper level, leaving you with feelings of resentment or envy? You may find it annoying to see them able to reach a deeper state of peace and wonder why you’re unable to do the same.

This is something that we all need to be reminded of when we find ourselves comparing our lives to the lives of others, and notice the urge to judge or draw negative conclusions about them.

At any given time, in any given moment, you are always exactly where you’re supposed to be, and so is everyone else. Our journeys may be different, but the destination is the same. Reminding yourself that everyone experiences struggles as their spirits evolve and grow in knowledge, is the key to embracing our differences with understanding and love.

No two lives are the same. Like tokens in a board game, we’re all moving through life at different rates of speed, encountering a variety of adventures along the way. Learning to appreciate those differences, and understanding that each person is simply a compilation of life experiences, we can begin to appreciate why we are all so unique and choose to embrace tolerance, compassion and understanding instead of judgment and criticism. We have more in common than we know, so make the choice to accept and support everyone. We’re all here together for a reason.
